Unmarked Southern Rifle

I bought this one quite a while back, maybe 10-12 years ago and have never studied it. It came out of an older collection. Thought I’d share some photos. Please feel free to contribute thoughts on attribution and origin. I think it may have passed through Jerry Nobles or the Wallace Collection.

Rifle #38 in Longrifles of the Blueridge (Bryson) has a triggerguard somewhat like this, but rounded ends, and thinner.  Triggers and butt similar too.  Unfortunately it's unsigned.  The author says it may be a gunsmith trained by Robert Hughes or John Huff.

I also see some resemblance to some Joseph Bogle rifles, at least the lockscrew plate.  The triggerguard has the same sort of curves, but again is much wider and later looking than this one.

That's for sharing the pics.  Odd patchbox.  Fat boy and never seen one clipped to make it fit the stock.  Almost a use what I got look.

Thanx for posting, Bill,... she's a right nice rifle,.. how about some specs ,..??? ... single lock bolt is late flint,..?,.. does the triggers and lock panel make anyone else think of upstate South Carolina, the "Dark Corner" area,..??..I believe the patchbox was added by a later owner,.... would be great to have  Gerald remark on this one,....regards,.. I'm with the "fiddler" on the later addition of the box.  Too much quality work in the thing for the original maker to add a snub nosed box which was apparently cut down to fit.
