Mankind's ingenuity at solving problems or creating something new never cease to amaze me.

And the progression in the firearms business really occurred rather quickly, from the matchlock in the 17th century, to the flintlock, then the caplock, and finally to the cartridge rifle in the mid-19th century.  All in the name of taking game, or defending from or attacking an enemy.
