Anything to "see" around Lancaster PA for flintlock fans?
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:00:32 AM »
Hello everyone,

I am a 36 year old, recent (<2 years) transplant to north-central PA from southern New Hamster via a decade long layover in overcrowded urban Connecticut.

I've been gunning (no pun intended) to go to Lancaster ever since I read Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age. I've been "enthusiastic" (read: hot) for traditional PA rifles ever since I shot my first Thompson/Center Hawken during last summer (not that it is traditional, but it got the fire started)...got a really nice yet affordable 54 cal on order from TVM as I write this.

The girlfriend unit is compliant. Is there anything to see down there specifically for fans of the Pennsylvania-Kentucky rifle? Also, what are some other good sites to see there for general purpose/tourism? The gf most likely wants to shop, but if it gets me my rockbanger fix I'm more than happy to oblige her.

Thanks!

Professor.....the best thing going right now is the display of Berks County guns and horns on display in Reading, Pa.   It's
a fantastic display of guns from that county, among the best that were ever done there.  The display is at the Historical
Society of Berks County, Museum and Library, 940 Centre Ave. (Rt. 61), Reading, Pa. 19601.   The display will continue until some time in December............Don

Prof,
Don probably has the scoop on displays but if you get hungry look for a restaurant called "The Loft". It's been many years ago that I was there but it was the best thing going for a long way around.

Landis Valley Farm Museum has a pretty good display of flint and percussion rifles in the gun shop. When we were there the gunsmith was building a flint pistol. He gives a good talk about the building longrifles.

You might want to visit Dixons gun shop in Kempton PA it is dedicated to muzzle loaders. You can look them up on the net.

Dixon's is worth the trip. I missed the gun building fair by 2 weeks this year! The wife and kids were with me vacationing around there, and Cabella's and Dixon's were my treat for putting up with hundreds of "Amish Antique" stores the missus made me endure!
