"Rich Pierce" Horn
« on: July 21, 2022, 07:54:13 PM »
On May 31st Rich posted in Antique Accoutrements a picture of a horn he purchased with what I considered a novel and attractive base plug. I admit to a certain affliction/addiction to what I consider attractive base plugs on powder horns, so I had to try my hand at replicating this one.

The horn Rich posted is unengraved. I chose to decorate this one with an engraved design I saw on a horn in the Colonial Williamsburg horn collection.

I'll have it at the Kempton Gunmakers' Fair next week, so if you are there, stop by.

John

Rich,

I'll look forward to that and meeting you.

I'll be at Dave P. seminar on Friday am as I build an English fowler and need to learn more.

See you next week.

John

Beautiful as always John. The file work is really well done, the butt carving and uniform thickness of the horn is over the top. The engraving is "Icing On The Cake".

PS: You beat me to it :) TC

PSS: Are you going to color it? TC

Tim,

I usually color a horn before I engrave it, but have done it after without problems. Since I have several colored for Kempton, I thought I would this one "in the white", at least for now.

Get busy, I want to see your work on that base plug. HAHA

Beautiful work, John. I like the execution of the feature of alternating convex concave panels of the end plug that carry into the horn.

Thanks for the compliments. Glad you enjoyed seeing the horn, and thanks again Rich for posting the original.

Always looking at old horns with interesting architectural features or engraving designs.

I took the original around at the Kempton Gunmaker’s Fair and some thought it quite early; perhaps late 1700s.
