Stock shaping with toe out
« on: August 11, 2022, 06:45:58 PM »
I just finished installing my buttplate (early Hawken plate from TOTW) and installed it with the toe out maybe 1/4" from the centerline. It started out as a mistake because my centerline was apparently not centered. But then I shouldered it with the plate taped on and it was so comfortable I decided to finish it that way.

My comb line and buttplate heel extension are pretty much centered on the barrel center line.

What is the best way to shape the butt stock/wrist and handle the trigger guard for a toe out configuration? I was thinking it might be easiest and still look ok to have the toe line bend at the end of the trigger plate (Davis dst6), keeping the toe line corners parallel back to the toe after the bend. That way I can avoid funky shaping in the wrist.

Thoughts? Other things I should consider when diving into shaping the butt stock with the toe out?

I’m interested in hearing how folks do the toe out thing and don’t cant the buttplate. Or maybe they do?

My buttplate is definitely canted slightly counterclockwise, but the comb on the barrel center line. So it's sort of reverse of what a lot of people do with castoff where they have the the heel out but the toe is still centered.

An in line picture would help but I don't have one.

Personally, I don’t see how that will work with the long Hawken trigger plate. It will be crooked on one end or the other.

It is actually Davis's large double set trigger, not the Hawken  set. The trigger plate terminates just forward of the comb nose. So I was thinking, make the bend there directly underneath the nose, and just bend the rear extension of the trigger guard or maybe grip rail to center it on the toe line.

What triggerguard you have?

I will either make my own scroll guard (or similar) with the rear extension soldered onto the scroll, or I'll modify this ohio guard https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/935/1/TG-VINC-2-I

Put the pivot point directly under the sear, that will be the location of the adjustment screw. Draw a line from the center of the tow to the  centerline of the gun at your pivot point. Set your triggerplate  as close as you can and see what it looks like.

The trigger is already in and done.

The closer the pivot point to the buttplate the more the offset will show. If you just blend it together the best you can your probably the only one who will notice.

Thanks for the advice.

Apparently, my eyes are crooked. After staring at my stock last night for an hour and drawing and redrawing centerlines, apparently my trigger plate was inletted a little crooked where the rear end was starting the toe line out, which is part of the reason my buttplate inlet started in a toe out position! The buttplate toe is still a little further out than the centerline of the trigger plate.

With my crooked eyes and amateur skill set, my mistakes turned into a happy one, as I like the fit of it when shouldering. The slightly off trigger plate will create a nice transition to the toe and I don't think there will be any awkward uneveness in my wrist.

Boy do I feel like a novice  ;)

If it’s not this crooked you can rest easy knowing it’s not the most crooked ever built.

Making some progress. The bottom of the wrist looks a little thicker on one side, even though the wrist is of equal thickness when measuring squarely across. I don't think anyone would ever notice!
