Very nice --- one thing for sure is that you can follow the outline very precisely without mucking up. That would be all well and good when I was in my 20's - 30's and 40's but not after that age for me.

Noooooo……. Not foot powered……saw is just hanging in the kerf taking a rest for the pic.
A little over an inch a minute if I’ve eaten my wheaties. Getting practice at saw sharpening again.

Satwel…..it is called a framesaw ( there are several types of saws called frame saws) and many woodworking tool suppliers handle them . Highland Woodworkers Supply comes to mind, but Amazon or EBay also. If there is a woodworking store in your area they probably will have them.

From the looks of it, you saw pretty straight. My first blank was sawed using a 9" Skillsaw and the next day ordered a bandsaw......Fred

A hand saw will work fine when I clamp the stock in a vertical position and then hold the saw lightly and let gravity help do the work. I also check both sides of the stock often to make sure I'm cutting square. It's vupa vupa vupa check check and so on.

I have a bandsaw, bur still often find myself cutting out a stock with my hand saws. If you have the right saw [ cross cut/ ripping ] it really doesn't take that long

How does that framesaw handle curves?

Using my big box store handsaw on my first blank was some work, but absolutely enjoyable. I did have to get a little creative to get the curves cut. I also had to check the other side of my blank often to ensure I wasn't too far off square. Then rasp rasp rasp rasp... A plane would be better

Satwel, check out Highland Woodworking for a frame saw. One could be easily made but they sell one that comes loaded with a blade with Japanese styled teeth. Narrow kerf and fast/clean cutting. I don't think you sharpen these blades, you just replace them when they get dull. They are called the Classic 700 and the Classic 400. I think the 400 would probably be big enough for cutting out a stock blank and they do have a really narrow blade available for that one that would handle curves well. I was thinking about buying one myself.

Cutting them out like that would certainly take one back to the olden ways. It is difficult seeing in the picture, but how is the blank secure on the workbench that keeps it in place? I see a kwik clamp laying on the bench, but nothing attached to the blank.

I'm tempted to do what I've seen pics of Daniel Coats doing and cut a blank vertically instead of using a bandsaw, but the bandsaw sure is easy for this old guy.

The blank is just sitting there for the pic. I do use the quick clamps to hold when working on it.

i have the tools and equipment to do it both ways, i take my pick when starting a build. if i wont to have more fun, i do it the old way.
