Cold blue?
« on: November 05, 2009, 04:04:45 AM »
I will blue the barrel of my new rifle with Perma blue.
I have used Black Magic before but it was not much durable.
I need advise about how to apply several coats, what do you do between coats?
No oil I presume, just wash, dry and apply a new coat?

Thanks
Martin

I have not used perma blue before, but I have used Brownell's Oxpho blue. I generally wipe the part with acetone and warm it a little with a heat gun before wiping on the solution. Do this three or four times and you get a close approximation of a charcoal blue finish. It doesn't look or wear like a modern hot blue finish, but that's not the look you are after anyway.

I also use Brownell's Oxypho blue.  It is very easy to put on.  And while it wears off, that might be to the good, because it gives the rifle a worn look after some use.  The lock, trigger plate, screws, bolts and other steel parts can be blued with a propane torch.  That blue also wears, but I like it.
