Here's a link for a short video of gun flint knapping. Makes it look easy. But we know it's not.
Right Rich?

Interesting!  I think I'll still get Rich to make my flints.

You may want to read about the Bevel Bro's. attempt at flint knapping in the September, '09 "Muzzle Blasts,"  pp. 41-43.  Based on their experience, I think I'll purchase mine from Rich Pierce as well.

The knapper in the video is obviously very experienced  and is clearly using blond French flints.  It would be intresting for Rich to give his thoughts on the technique shown as against his own.  Sort of like a different way of carving a fantail.  Part of the skill set to be aware of whether we use it or not.  Lon

I've never seen that technique, using a small "anvil before.

I do note that he's just showing the easy part. He's already gotten some really high quality flint, gotten rid of all the "rind" or outer parts that are no good, broken a nodule open, created a "core" and struck off some very nice blades.  All he's doing at this point is squaring them up.  He's obviously very good at the earlier stages as well, because he has nice square topped flints there.

If you put your Dixon's hats on you'll remember Bob Winters doing the demo thing using a small anvil to knapp gun flints. He sets up a few spaces down from the Getz table. There is a picture of him working on Dixons site in the picture section.  Interesting process...
Who was it that said "Don't knapp flint unless ya like to Bleed?".
