My version of Va/Nc rifle
« on: August 21, 2022, 03:05:15 AM »
Awhile back (6 months to a year ago) Dennis posted some pics of a Va or possibly a Nc rifle that interested me.  So I built this rifle with what pics I had and did some aspects that interest me since this will be my rifle for this next hunting season.  The stock started out as a blank I picked up locally which I have a second stock waiting for a different project, the grain isn’t running in the right direction thru the wrist but I’m okay with it.  The barrel is a Rice 50cal. Southern profile with round grooves and the lock is Kibler.  The butt plate I can’t remember but I modified it.  The triggerguard was a French military/tulle that I shaped to match the pics I had.  The trigger and patch box I made.  This rifle weighs just under 7lbs according to bath scale.  Hopefully the pics show up, I’m not much for posting pics nor am I any good at taking pics of rifles, never realized how difficult it was to take great pics like some folks post.

I couldn’t get the patch box release to work by pushing on the toe plate which the original had, so I used a fake screw  thru the toe plate for the release.  Here’s a couple more pics.

Nice, the original has a straight taper barrel and about 52 cal. I used a 50 cal Rice that Bobby Hoyt tapered for me. I sold that rifle and now I wish I had it back. It was a great handling rifle and if I recall it weighed about 6.75 pounds.

I don’t remember what the drop of the butt is, but it points well even with low sights.  I’m gonna switch out the brass front sight for a silver one which is what I usually use.  First time to the range she shot well, just some issue with fouling, need to experiment patch thickness and ball size.  I would like to build another one with a tapered barrel and get it closer to how the original was.  This was the first tapered and flared barrel that I fully inletted, it was some work but not terrible.  I’ve usually had the barrel inlet and ram rod done by others and only do those things on builds with straight barrels.
