Acanthus leaf carving video from The Woodwright's Shop
« on: October 31, 2009, 05:33:41 PM »
I just watched an episode of The Woodwright's Shop where Roy Underhill's guest, carver Mary May, demonstrated carving an acanthus leaf.  I immediately thought of Acer's jaeger and that the video might be helpful to others on the board.  If it is not close enough to gun building, I'll move the thread to OTBF.

Here's a link to the video.

Like it. This online tutorial business has LOTS of potential. This video is VERY well done.

Thanks, Larry, for posting this.

Larry.....I just happened to tune it in also, found it very enjoyable.   She made it look so easy.   I still enjoy the stuff Bivins did, he was a great carver.............Don

The thing I took away from the video was how she roughly relieved the area away from cut edges with a V tool before stabbing in the edge with a gouge. This way the actual wood on the leafs is not compressed as there was " give" to the outside being that there was just a sliver of wood left there.

Also amazed at the speed in which a competent carver can work.

This lady is GOOD!! AND fast.  Just makes is seem effortless.  NOT like my attempts.

If you noticed, she does the traditional style of carving that Jerry H. is a proponent of.  Relieve the back ground first, stab in after.

In His grip,

Dane

Wow!  Impressive.  That lady can carve!

She did in 15 minutes what would have taken me most of the winter - and somehow my attempts don't really look quite like that either ....   :P

Isn't it amazing how "easy" something looks - when it's being done by a master craftsman!
