Old stock holding devices for stocks

The only devices I have ever seen or used  were made of hard wood and looked kind of like a black smith vice. Have made made these old tools for making old rifles for years .  Any comments appreciated.

I use a 6" Record machinist's vise with rubber pads made from conveyor belting material.  My vise has a swivel base which gives me up to about 270 deg. rotation in either direction.  I have two supports that are adjustable for height to support a long stock sticking out either left or right.  I have made ~ 130 longrifles, pistols and smoothbores with this set up.

The vise you are describing reminds me of a carpenter's vise.

I use, generally, a 4” vise with Brownell’s inserts of plastic that have the aluminum backing plates.
I use the ones intended for metal. Can use them either way.
I have one set that is 40 years old. They will burn and they can be cut. But I have never had reason to cuss them. I have 3 sets now. I do wipe them off  with alcohol it I think they might have something on them I don’t want on wood.
