Finished Christian Springs Gun
« on: November 07, 2022, 12:59:57 AM »
Finally finished this thing.  It has a 42” 20 ga oct/rd barrel and a Dale Johnson lock.  The trigger guard, buttplate and patch box are Mike Brooks products. Everything I know about a longrifle has come from the people on this board and books referred to me from people here.  Thanks everyone for your advice and help.  I should be able to hit squirrels and maybe even a turkey with this one!

Very nicely done. I’m a fan of the carving. All of it looks very good but around the comb it really shines for me.

Great job, Mike. The carving is spectacular! Did you make your own pattern? Curious as to how you laid out the stock profile..thanks, Allen

Allen,

I took the stock pattern from the original off the KRA disk.  I had to modify it some for my LOP but was able to make it work.  All of the carving is done with a parting tool.  I practice the carving on paper and then free hand it to the stock and start tapping away.  This was my first attempt at relief carving so it was a learning experience.

Absolutely splendid rifle. Beautifully crafted. How long did it take for you to build it.

Thank you sir,  In all this one took me five months.  I went at a snails pace and redone about everything three times.  It was my first Christian Springs gun and the first time I've dealt with relief carving so that stretched it out some.  I still work full time, have 6 kids, and coach basketball in the evenings so it's sometimes hard to find any free time.

The barrel shot a good pattern on a different  gun 3 years ago..  I haven’t had a chance to try it out on this one.  I have metal shavings in my right eye and it makes it difficult to hit squirrels with open sights on a rifle.  Im hoping this one will help my odds.
