Done went Hillbilly
« on: November 26, 2022, 08:41:45 PM »
This is a little fun project that I’m doing for a buddy here on Stoner Creek. Southern, no-skool. I haven’t worked any walnut in awhile. Straight 13/16” 40 cal. The plan is to accent the piece with copper. Copper inlays, overlays, the works. My buddy David Pennington forged the guard. Liston Rice lock and trigger.
Charlie Burton made the barrel for me. When I ordered it he asked me how long I wanted it? I told him “forever I recon “.
This one is getting a two piece “lobed” patchbox with copper overlaid.
I’m getting back away from it for awhile so the creative stuff can get going. Will keep y’all posted.
W

That's going to be a nice one.  Copper will look great against the walnut.  Can't wait to see the progress.

Very nice.  So how long is a “forever I recon “barrel?  Looks pretty long in the picture.

I’ll be watching this one, Wayne.
Picked up the same lock and triggers from Liston at Friendship and am waiting on a barrel from Charlie, but I went 3/4” in .38 cal. Got a couple nice blanks in Walnut and Maple. Haven’t decided which way to go yet and hopefully don’t have much longer to wait on the barrel.  ;D

42 inches. It looks longer. I’ve got the skinny thing going on with the forestock.

The inside clearances are too tight after the trigger knives are ground. You’re going to have to file and polish both inside surfaces or the trigger will not work properly. That’s what I did this morning. They work beautifully now.

I'm aware that our forefathers didn't understand barrel harmonics, but is a 3/4" barrel 'whippier' than a larger barrel?

Probably not with the 38 cal.
I’m trying to figure a load for a B profile 50 cal shooting a 390 grain bullet in a 1/28 twist by 42 inch barrel. If whippy is an issue I’m sure that I’ll learn all about that.

Very neat. I'm excited to see what you come up with. Either a walnut, cherry, or ash and steel/copper creative piece is what I was thinking I might go for on build #2.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out, as I have a build in walnut I haven't finished yet.

What are you planning on finishing it with?

I haven’t really considered that part yet. I think that a reddish brown color might be nice.
Finish, likely a tung oil finish with a hardener. This won’t happen until probably February. I’ve put the project into mothballs for awhile. Gots to come up with some more inspiration.
