I have a couple of older guns; they have that green crud that builds up on unpolished brass.

Other than pickin it off, is there a way to get rid of the crud without losing the patina of old brass?

The green crud is the best kind of patina. A toothbrush used in several random directions, wetted with detergent water, will reduce the fur. Anything chemical or more aggressive mechanically will affect all the patina, in my experience.

I’ve had luck with a q-tip and 91% rubbing alcohol.  Try it in an inconspicuous spot first.
