Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifle.
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:24:36 PM »
Hello,
My name is Stefan from Sweden and I am new in this forum. Usually, I collect old Winchester and Marlin lever actions and old Colt single actions.
As long as I can remember I have been interested in the old American West. Because of this interest a dream is to someday buy a Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifle. Old Winchesters, Marlins and Colts you can find here in Sweden but an old Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifle is almost impossible. Therefore I should be more than happy if someone on this forum could give me an advice where to look. I mean, if there are any dealers in this kind of rifles who would ship internationally. Any advice at all should be very much appreciated.
Maybe I have to be content with to read about the rifles in books but I must admit that to own one myself that should be something really extra.
Best regards,
Stefan Andersson

Welcome Stefan!

You're certainly at the right place.

If you don't already have them, books such as Shumways' Rifles of Colonial America-Vol's I & II, works by Joe Kindig, James Whiskers and others, cover many of the different builders, time periods and are must reads.

Often, you'll see someone here pass-on information about auctions that include American longrifles, some by known makers and many others that are not, but are nonetheless, representative of a certain part of the country and a certain time period in our history.

There is even the field of contemporary longrifle collecting and that is certainly to be found here, as well.

Pull up a chair, take a look at the library and use the search feature.  What you see here, is only a fraction of the information available to you, on this site.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for your welcome. I really appreciate it.

When it comes to the book "Thoughts on the Kentucky rifle in its golden age" by Kindig,  is there any special edition I shall look after or....

I will be back with a lots of questions....

Once again, thanks.

I would say to buy the current edition.  They are all identical in content except each later edition has an addendum with current notes not found in previous ones.  It will also probably be cheaper than earlier editions which booksellers seem to think are gold.  As the current edition sells out (they are limited runs) the price will jump from $70 to $250 again.

Go to  www.gunbroker.com  and type in  Kentucky, and also Pennsylvania,   There are lots of  flint locks and cap lock rifles for sale on there now.  I was looking at them last night.  Enjoy!

Stephan, if you go to the rifles's being sold by the seller Hessfine from Saint Petersburg, Florida, and THEN click on "View Sellers Other Auctions" , you'll see some more Kentucky rifles that are being sold by him that don't come up on the normal serch for Kentucky and for Pennsylvania. Possibly, one has to type in Kentucky Pennsylvania or visa versa. Anyway, there are some really nice old originals for sale and these types only ocassionaly come up on Gunbroker. Check them out and you can learn a lot from looking at them even if you don't decide to buy any.   Fred G. (whitedog)

How do I say "hi" to an Hombre in Sweden? Ola?  I get to Europe at least once a year and have had business relationships in Belgium and Ex-Yu.  How friendly is Sweden to entry of antique guns and disposal there?  The issue can be dealt with on this side of the pond, with a bit of advance preparation and avoiding certain airlines and routes.   JWH

Hi, is very much okey, JWH but if you want to impress try "Hej". ;D

Here in Sweden guns are considered very cheap if you compare it with the U.S.A because of the license system we have. It is not so easy to get licenses if you want to have many guns. Anyway, there are NO licences on flintlocks and percussion guns as soon as they are not replicas then we need license.

I know of at least one american guy who come almost every year and buy a lot of guns. Guns which will not sell here but I guess, he make good business.

JWH, you are very much welcome here and should you bring a    Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifle well, then... ;D
Best,
Stefan

If that is the case, how about shipping by international freight? Friendly country here and friendly country on your side.  Just taxes and duties. Or we could both go fishing at the same time and meet at the Flemish Cap, create our own duty-free store.  As they say on the Adriatic and in my hometown, Nacin se moze naci, a way can be found. :D

My wife says "Forresten, jagmenar vad som billig? Jagarna for Kentuckies?" I take no responsibility for this.
