Will a regular wood chisel work to open up the corner of a dovetail ? thanks

I bought a small cold chisel at the hardware store and ground it to fit.  The wood chisel will have the wrong angles and probably be too soft.

You will have a more precise bearing on the bottom flat of the dovetail if you grind your chisel with one long flat and one short flat (offset the cutting edge).
