Unusual stock finish result

Any ideas on what caused the light areas in this maple stock finished to 320 grit and whiskered.
Wasn’t much figure or grain to begin with but I’ve never seen a result like this before – in a stock or other wood project.
Stain was 2 coats of a cherry aniline stain by a reputable manufacture.
Maybe just the nature of the wood?

Probably just the wood talking. If it were mine, I would apply a topcoat of a different color to downplay the reddish hue, take the blahness out of it. Try playing with different tones and layering them on, see what happens

Looks like blotching. The stock has areas of hard and soft portions, the softer portions absorbed more of the stain than the harder areas and became darker. Pre stain conditioners, sanding to higher grits, or using a tinted topcoat finish are ways around this problem.

 With maple I always start with aquafortis or vinegaroon to accent any curl in the wood. Then use dye, or stain, to give it something other than one color. Don’t be afraid to give it a good rub with some maroon scotchbrite to adjust it.
