Incised carving patterns
« on: February 12, 2023, 10:23:32 AM »
I'm looking for a source of illustrations of carved incised patterns, not relief.
It will be for a mostly unadorned smaller caliber hunting rifle.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks, John ,,,,

You could do well to study guns of the Upper Susquehanna valley as well as Bucks Co. guns.  Both areas largly used incise carving.  Good direct on photos can be copied and then enlarged on your printer to the exact dimensions of the area you are looking to carve.

I am wondering the same thing on my first build. Seems like some gunsmith of the Berks school used it. I don’t want anything to fancy. There are some really knowledgeable people on here so they can help you.

Rifle #61 in Kindig’s book is incised carved. The gunsmith is G. Feder. The carving behind the cheek piece is more folk art than Rococo. I think George Shumway called this type of carving in the region “Dutchified Rococo”

John…, take a look at these CD’s offered by the  Kentucky Rifle Foundation.  http://kentuckyriflefoundation.org/krf-store/
Excellent photos of rifles and related carving.  I don’t believe I have it, but the Bucks Co. one would most likely have some nice incised examples.  Pretty sure they now have them on thumb drives as well.  Best,

Thanks all, I'm fairly handy but not artistic at all, the illustrations will help.
Thanks again, John,,,,

many low relief carvings can be easily drawn as incised.

Daryl, the carving on the ‘Verner’ rifle is outstanding, is that your work?
