Chambers Fowler - Casehardened Lock
« on: February 28, 2023, 06:23:09 AM »
I am building a Chambers Flintlock Fowler Kit.  I has a fantastic piece of wood and is comming along nicely.  I was debating how to finish the lock and decided to caseharden it.  I didn’t polish it very brightly so it would have a more matt finish (320 grit, new cloth so pretty gritty) and I really like how it turned out.  I am posting pics of the build and other projects on a website I am creating.  It is www.gundoctor.ca.  The barrel is almost done browning and the stock is looking pretty good.  I used tannic acid and aqua fortis for the color and tung oil.  Tonight I put a coat of OSMO oil to give it a bit more water protection.  The small screws and such I nitre blued.

That casehardening turned out sweet! Did yo7 block or back up the lock while hardening to keep it from warping. I’ve got the same Chambers lock that you do I may tr6 to case harden too. Can you share the case hardening process like what temp. how long and did you use just bone charcoal???
Thanks,
Cheers Richard

Thanks, I didn’t block it and it still seems straight and flat.  I used a 2/3 wood chsrcoal, 1/3 bone mix.  730 C for 2 hours, i had light air bubbles from an air-stone and an aquarium air pump for 2 hours before dunking.

Nice job on the lock. The stock looks great colour wise, too.

Hi,
Nice colors.  Did you temper the plate and flintcock after case hardening.  If not, I urge you to do so please the steel contains enough carbon to risk through hardening at the thin spots. I temper my plates and flintcocks at at least 490 degrees F for 1 hour.  I go to 600 degrees F when I want the temper blue color.

Lock looks great.
That's about the same temp we used when I worked at Turnbulls.
1430F was our temp and we had to hold it +/- 5*
Time in furnace was 2 hrs.
Only 2 different mixes.
One was 2 parts wood char / one part Bone char
The other was the other way around.
Mix it up outside on a windy day so the dust in each blows away. You don't want that in the mix. Just the granular char.

No blocking of parts though initially it was done. Warpage was overcome to the point where spacers, blocks and such were not used at all.

The char mix for the next days use was placed in a thin sheet metal box & placed on top of one of the furnaces that had been shutdown late in the afternoon  for the day.
Over night the residual heat would dry the mix out for use the next day. Moisture in the pack will cause some spots to appear in the colors and sometimes no color at all.

No bubbles or anything extra in the quench. It was however warmed to 90*F for the quenching process.
That along with the close control on the temp helped keep warpage away.
We still had some through.,,and cracked parts as well.
The really bad stuff never gets mentioned of course!

Colors are possible at lower furnace temps but little or no hardening can result. Warpage or the chance of it was greatly reduced .

That was actually a desired result at one time until shooters actually started  using their guns alot instead of just admiring them and close fitting parts started gauling.
The colors on those non-hardened parts wear very easily as well.

There are lots of little ways to change the process and still get results. That's why the mfg'rs all had a slight difference in look. But they all got results just the same.

Thanks.  I have played with a wide range of temperatures and mixes and this seems to be pretty consistent for me. In some cases I drop the temperature by 50 C for about 30 minutes but for these locks I don’t drop it.  I haven’t had issues with brittle spots yet but in some cases I draw temper after putting a heavy coat of oil on the pieces to prevent the colors getting too dark.

The stock photos was after the first coat of oil.  Now that I have several coats on the tiger stripe is really starting to stand out.  I am still in the process of slow browning the barrel, hopefully it will be ready to put together this weekend.

Really nice even after one coat too and no whoop-de-doos one the straight section ps of the stock.
