What Is a Scroll Guard?

Still trying to education myself. Can someone please tell me what a scroll guard is?

A scroll guard is a trigger guard with a swell attached to it to enhance the grip. The English used the term scroll guard because the strap usually terminated in a scroll where it attached to the portion of the guard that was inletted into the stock. This is a typical example.

Ah, that is what I needed. Thanks. I was trying to figure out what scroll an a rifle was being guarded.

Haha. It is a quirk of the English language that we can't tell if the word is being used as an adjective or a subject.

You will find that this type of scroll was common on sxs  flinter  guards it carried on into the percussion era in different styles  mostly on large bore single  fowling guns another type were the live pigeon  guns , It died out in the  early breech loading shotguns and rifles with a straight tang  guard  If a  scroll tang was wanted this then became known has a pistol grip and built in the woodwork of the stock so we can say that a scroll guard was the for runner of the pistol in a long gun
