No such Rifle
« on: March 09, 2023, 06:30:46 PM »
Stonercreek and deepcreekdale recently put up a couple of cool 'offbeat' guns which folks seem to have enjoyed, including myself.  So here's another one of those that I just finished last spring that my provide some more entertainment. 'Tongue in cheek' is the byword here. :-)  It's my first gun in about 25 yrs. and I tried a few 'new to me' things that I learned here and on MLF. Some worked, some didn't, but I did try to improve on my stuff from back in olden times.  Any rate, to add to the 'forum fun' I'll leave out the origin story I concocted for now and let the forum decide the time period and geographic area it probably came from.  Have fun!

Looks like the Dutchman got his hands on a rifle barrel! Looks great! We need a back-story.

That was the backstory !  Bahahaha.  Very late 18c - early 19c no one's buying those big Hudson Valley Fowlers anymore and our man is mostly smithing and doing odd jobs now.  A fellow show up on his doorstep with a rifle bbl  and wants a gun made using it. Money is money and our old Dutchman is, well, a Dutchman, so he clears out his old shop, finds some unused hardware and sets to work. Our man neither knows nor cares about patchboxes, nosecaps, toeplates, cheekpieces, etc. so his customer gets what is really a fowler with a rifle bbl. in it. And goes away happy. After that, the chickens move back into the shop and our man goes out and weeds his garden, wondering why anyone would want a rifle in the first place.  The end.   :-)
