Some one was making a tool to cone touch holes from inside the barrel. Does anyone know where to find them?

I like Tom Snyder's cone tool tremendously. Works great.

I recall seeing a set of them for sale on this forum. They looked like bullet mold making cherries with a pilot pin on the pointed end. Darned if I can find them There were two sizes.

When the cone is complete, how hard is it to unscrew the cutter from the shaft? Have the small and medium which I haven't as yet used...will be doing so shortly....Fred

Unscrews with no problem Fred. There is a square section behind the cutter that I grip with needle nose and reverse the dril and it's free quickly. Be gentle tho, that's a small shaft on that tool! If I can do darn near anyone can.

Tom Snyder's coning tool: 1/16 drive shaft on cone tool, screws into burr.

Drill 1/16 hole in barrel. put drive shaft thru hole. hold burr w/needlenose pliers, insert carefully into bore. Have bbl horizontal, because when you drop the burr, it's down the bore, on the floor ..... somewhere.

I use battery powered drill to spin the coning tool. Oil the tool frequently. back it out, brush off chips. Oil cutter and start again. ( I got pretty casual, and screw the shaft into the burr with the cordless drill, unscrew it, too. Why not?)

When you think you might be getting close, grip flats on burr, and reverse drill. Shaft backs right out.

Inspect the web between cone and barrel face. I like less than .032" and more than .020" web.

Neatest little tool going. Get yerself one.

I don't know how Tom S can cut those little cherries so nicely. He's got the gift.

I just used one for the first time on that gun I built for my wife. Real easy to use and I had no problem unscrewing the cutter. I used a small battery powered dremel

set on a slow speed. Worked like a charm. Ignition is VERY fast.

This link appears to be inoperative.

Can someone point me to a source for a coning tool for the inside of the touch hole? I'd rather buy one than attempt to make one (not a machinist).

I have done three rifles with the medium one. Marvin Kemper told me about them at Friendship. Tom Snyder was selling them there.
Way faster than installing a white lightning liner.
I take a patched ball and run it down the barrel within 1 inch of where I drilled the 1/16 touch hole. I mount the barrel vertically and fill the barrel with ATF at the breech. I use a small cordless drill.
The operation is the same as Acer described except that the ATF cleans the chips and keeps the tool cool and clean though the process as you back it in and out. Also, if you do drop the burr while screwing it on , it stops at the ball and is easily retrieved with needle nose pliers or a magnet.

I like the patched ball idea. I just periodically apply a little cutting oil. Tom's little cutters are/were available in three sizes and do work well.

Oh YES - I remember that thread on antique inside coning tools. The egg beater style would be relatively quick.

Got one of Tom’s cones and plan to use it. I may be missing something but how do you measure the web after Coning to insure you are in your range of less than .032 but more than .020? There has got to be an easy way to do that that I’m just not seeing! Thanks.

A eyeball can see/judge what is just fine & what isn't. If it's too thin, it will wear/burn out more quickly.
If it's too long, ignition will be slowed, somewhat.
You could, pre-mark the shaft, the amount you want the web to be, if you don't trust your eyeball judgement.
In my opinion, powder in the cone should be visible at the vent, once loaded.
