Hi Folks:

Here is one of my latest projects. I got the idea for it from Madison Grant's book, page 141, in the Appalachian Pouch section. I really liked the asymmetrical shape of the body, but my flap is shaped differently. I suppose it is rather an "interpretation" of the original.

This one is made from veg-tan goatskin, and lined with blue stripe ticking. The rabbit hide flap is backed with goatskin. The body is welted on both side seams. 1" strap with a buckle adjustment. It is dyed black with iron/vinegar dye and then darkened with a natural leather conditioner. The brown areas are dirt and "wear." Small, hanging inside pocket. Dimensions are 6.5" square, not counting the irregular shapes I drew into the body pattern.

I think it makes a pretty good, small squirrel rifle pouch. Hope you like it.

Excellent job, a lot like some of the old originals I have seen. I've seen similar ones with squirrel and raccoon skin, with the hair on, tanned like you describe. Q: Know of any good old-time leather dye formulas anywhere on the net? I found several (some of the SCA folks are really into dyeing leather,) tried some, but many have ingredients the EPA won't let exist outside of a Hazardous Waste dump! Campchair
