Graver doodles
« on: April 14, 2023, 06:04:26 AM »
Going through my junk drawers I found a couple old doodles from over 20 years ago when I was learning to engrave. Was trying a few different styles/techniques of designs that would be suitable for long rifles. They are a mish-mash of different styles incorporated in each piece, not intended to be conceptually continuous, just random doodles. Wanted to try out the picture posting and thought some may find a small design concept that may be useful.

Helping my son move the over day and came across this that I gave him years ago. One of those little compass/sundials that the ML vendors sell. I engraved the lion on it for him "just because". I was quite happy with how it turned out.

"Doodles" he says!  Just throws it on there!  Ha! If I could ever 'doodle' like that, I never would have gone to engineering school! ::)

Very nice work, no matter what you wanna call it.  I may have to drag out some tools and material and try it again.  And of course looking forward to what you share next. ;D

Looks like presentation work, not doodles!
I'm practicing with my new Lindsay graver system now and it's getting better but still a lot of practice required.

A Ted Cash capper that I used for practice. I picked this up used at a rendezvous just for something to practice on

Dang!  Cody, you're terrible.  Thanks for the pics or your practice work!   :o :o

I have one of the TC 'comma' shaped capboxes.  Only works for one of my ML's, so now I'll have to see how bad I can mess it up!

And No! I ain't gonna share pics of it when I'm done!

But you can keep sharing, Cody!

It is pretty obvious that the first 3 practice plates were done earlier than the lion and the capper as my design and execution had very much improved (on the capper at least). The execution on the lion improved but the design was copied from a book. I do have a specific practice plate that I think would be somewhat eye opening and a useful aid but I can't find it. When I do I will post it up. For the record, I do not consider all of these designs to be period correct but rather, an analogous contemporary representation.

Those "doodles" look, to me, like excellent engraving.  I think you have it down!
