Lion Beck
« on: April 21, 2023, 10:56:26 PM »
I am currently working on a Lion Beck rifle and wish I had more pics of the carvings and inlays on J.P. Beck's original.
Other than a few side shots from a couple of Kindig's books there isn't much out there.
Mel Hankla said there is a full set of pics out there somewhere he would send me. I don't see any listed in the KRA archives though. Maybe I don't know how to search!
Is there a DVD or something available for sale out there?

The Henry Ford museum has a Christian Beck rifle on display also. It has an unengraved whale tail patch box. It's an old case so unfortunately you only get to see one side. Just in case you're ever in the area. If my memory serves me I believe you are/were  in the Lansing area.

Tom, your memory serves you well. But I try to avoid the chaotic Detroit area.
Christian's artistry was quite different from JP's.

I have good side shots, what I am looking for are detail shots top & bottom of the carved areas in the breech and rr entry pipe like you might see in RCA I & II books.

I can’t help you with additional photos, but I have a question for you.  It seems like somewhere along the line the comb of this rifle met with disaster, and a repair was done causing a strange profile for the top of the comb and an almost non-existent nose of the comb.  Are you going to replicate the gun as it looks now, or build it with a more “normal” Beck comb profile?  Thanks!  Jeff

Jeff, I believe that comb was cut down to fit a later owner/shooter. I am building it to fit me, and I am putting a wood patchbox on it too instead of brass.
Here is my progress to date:

Oh yeah, that looks great!  This rifle has always intrigued me.  Good luck with the rest of the build, and please do keep giving updates!

I suspect you’re looking for pictures of the tang, entry pipe and lower fore stock carving. I have built this gun 3 different times over the past 8 or 9 years but was never able to find those pictures so if you do find them and are willing to share, I would be interested to see them.  Your gun looks great!

Great job on the carving, Tom. Awesome inlays for the lions eyes. Is that the stock I traded you? Hope you’re doing well!

Ats5331, yes it is, along with the Getz .62 cal. x 47"oct/rnd rifled barrel!!!!

938783, from what you say, sounds like those pics are not out there. But if I find them I will share them. I have numerous other Beck rifle pics I can follow for ideas.

Tom, There is a KRA CD from 2018 Rifles of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. THere are 2 in the ALR library including the fancy red one.

I received the KRA flash drive (not CD) yesterday and reviewed it. As a follow-up, there are 11 different JP Beck rifles, most of them I had seen already. The "Lion Beck" is not in this collection.  (But I did get some helpful pics from JD Beck's collection this week).
There are 9 other builders rifles in this file including 3 N. Beyer and 2 P. Berry rifle that show a lot of Becks influence. Also 3 pistols.
The photography is excellent with multiple pics of each gun to help the builder or collector.

You’re welcome, maybe next time I’m at RockFord I can try to get better photos…

You’re doing a phenomenal rendition of this rifle! Absolutely beautiful I am extremely jealous😂😂😂
