Touch hole location
« on: May 19, 2023, 11:05:21 PM »
I have a NOS Rayl barrel, 50 cal., 7/8" dia., with an installed breech plug. The threads measure .5 inches which is great but the plug is recessed inside to a depth of 0.92" . My question is, can I locate the touch hole liner into the side of the plug?

wapiti22,
I believe that the touch hole is meant to be located in the octagon section of the plug, if that's what you're asking.

That would be normal.

I actually like that style of plug because it gives you some leeway as far as positioning the lock. I just used something similar in a pistol. It allowed me to position the small lock closer to the rear of the barrel than a normal plug would have.

How deep is the cavity in the plug? It looks shallow to me and its depth will determine the location of the hole liner.
I also like these chambered plugs but I know a lot of us do not have a machine shop to play in.

Bob- the OP noted this in his first post: "The threads measure .5 inches which is great but the plug is recessed inside to a depth of 0.92" ."

Locate the touch hole in the proper location for the lock (I like the fence right even with the back of the plug) and, if the recess in the plug is not deep enough for that, drill the recess deeper until it is just at the back of the liner threads. An end mill (as opposed to a drill bit) would be nice as it would leave a nice square bottom. Held tight in a good vice and run slow, an end mill would work in a drill press since the recess is already well established as a guide.

A rigid set up on a drill press is a must if you're using an end mill.A 4 flute or even a 5 or 7 flute would be better.
I have a heavy drill press but the milling machine is much better. Most home shop drill presses are too flimsy for
this job so approach with caution.

Thanks for all the help.  I've done several builds but none with a plug like this. Didn't want to screw it up.
