Thanks for the description. Indeed, it has been a puzzle in my mind how to bring a curve forward (though curve is slight) and wavy top down, both at the same time.

The only other thing I can suggest is to try another web browser. I use Mozilla Firefox on my desktop and Samsung Internet on my tablet, Crome on my phone all with no problems.

If so inclined, you could make your own micro-gouges and chisels

Zoro (a Grainger subsidiary) is decent source for Drill Rod (and other supplies). Sign up and receive 10-20% off coupons via email.

Jakob,

Thanks for taking the verbal explanation to a nice graphic! Do you mind if I borrow them for my teaching files?

I learned that method from Ron as well!  Excellent way to inlet a butt piece, especially the more intricate ones.  Best,

Wonderful graphics Jakob! and the process you described is very similar to my mine. In the images I posted I am at the ~1mm from where it should be. I try to remember that because of the radius of the arc, the edges of the finale move slightly forward each small step it goes downward.
I agree  Ron! Jakob did an excellent job depicting how you teach to inlet a butt plate. This mimics what I imagined in my mind while you explained it it me.
ForesterDJ, (<- only way to get the auto reject to allow me to spell your name correctly...)
You can do it! All of the advise in this thread is spot on. Go slow, stop if it does not "feel" right and think about how it slowly curves into place.

I find the quality of the wood chosen for the inletting makes a difference. broomy wood ? hardly anyone can make that work! nice dense fine grain then you can blame the foul ups on the builder.
Opinions are expensive. Rich people rarely if ever voice their opinion.

Goo, you  are spot on. Many people starting out will buy cheap wood, large grain and soft wood, that almost guarantee’s them a lot of headaches and almost impossible to inlet cleanly. Especially true in Black walnut.

Great description of how it's done, Jakob!
