A North Carolina Horn
« on: May 27, 2023, 04:27:39 PM »
This one is after a horn on pages 36-37 of Dr, Hopkins' Bone Tipped and Banded Horns Pt II, it is identified as a Piedmont North Carolina horn.
It is about 16" around the outside curve and 12" tip-to-tip. The butt is Walnut and is 2 1/4" in diameter and is hollowed out about 3/4s its length. It is held in by 3 Iron nails that also hold the base band in place. It has a Brass tack in the finial as did the original. The tip is made up of a collar made from Whitetail antler and a tip made from cow horn. The tip is threaded to the collar and the collar is pinned to the horn with 3 wooden pegs. On the original the collar was threaded and screwed on to the horn. Color is AF and brown shoe polish.

The base is great. Did you have to work on making the horn that round, or was the horn that way?

Unless you are making a horn using the natural shape of opening all horns are rounded using Boiling water, Hot oil or Dry heat as in a heat gun. This one was done with water and then the base was made to fit.

That horn has a really nice curve, very appealing to the eye.  Nice.
