Deer Leg Hunting Pouch
« on: December 05, 2009, 05:03:58 PM »
Pictured here is a classic companion to a European Hunting outfit.  The body of the bag is constructed of Veg Tan Pigskin. It is completely lined with thin Lambskin and edged with a forest green Calfskin.  Wool strap, with two buckles. The flap is decorated with tanned Deer leg sections with dew claws. There are two interior pockets as well as a damascus knife sheathed onto the back.

Very very classy Ron.  That's the perfect pouch for a Jaeger or German smoothbore.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Ron,
Nice work.
Do you know how far back that style of pouch can be documented?

I asked Ken Scott the same question and he didn't recall useable documentation.  There is a photo of large pouch with game rings in a book with Arms from the Hermitage Museum.  It is photographed with an early flint gun but that is no guarantee that there is any connection.  I have made inquiry of Jurgen Malerik but have got no info yet. Bill Young had collected a number Jaeger related items but he passed away a couple years ago.

If anyone has photos of original documented Pouches of this nature, I'm sure we would all like to see them.
