Iron rifle parts
« on: December 01, 2009, 09:58:26 PM »
Finally got my butt plate and trigger gaurd ready for my class with Ian and Jim. I made them from wrought iron. I love working with the stuff although it can be frustrating sometimes. Now I need to make some sheet iron up for rod pipes and maybe a patch box. I start out with 5/8" thick iron and have to thin it down. Getting it to .065" takes a lot of elbow grease when you don't own a power hammer. :o

Very nice!  The rear tang attachment to the grip rail on the trigger guard is unique.  Cool trigger guard.  How did you fasten the two pieces of the butt plate?  Is it pinned and brazed?

G, I seen a similar trigger guard on Ray Mcknight's video.  Yes the butt is pinned and brazed.

Shooter this is old bridge iron that another smith salvaged. He lives in VA where the bridge was getting torn down. I bought all the small stuff that he had left. You can find it advertised on blacksmith sites once in a while thats where I found mine. Brad Emig used to have some for sale, I don't know if he has more or not.
