What size breech plug?
« on: December 01, 2009, 06:43:50 AM »
What size breech plug should be in a 3/4" .36 caliber barrel.  I have one here with a 5/8 plug which makes the walls thinner than I'm used to seeing, or is it me over reacting?

Thanks,
Bill

billd,

Yes, I think you are.  The only place it's thin, is where the breechplug is.  Don't see that being an issue.
A 3/4" .36 cal barrel should have some pretty good walls anyway. A .36 should give you around .100 on the outer walls, even with the rifling.
Pressure should be pretty low any way.  I've got a .40 x 3/4", shoot 65g fffg, and could double it safely if necessary.

Smallpatch,  Thanks for the reply. I know the walls are thick enough but the wall where the thread ends is only .062.

What size breech plug is in your .40?

The biggest you'd need would be 1/2, in my opinion. The tap drill for 75% thread engagement is 7/16".

Thanks Tom, The barrel is already breeched.  I feel the plug is too big.  Looking for other opinions.

Cut it off and re-breech. I don't like the thinness of your existing wall. No sir, I don't. Not one bit. Others may correct me if I'm way off base, but I'd like to have more than .062 wall right near my head.

I believe the 3/4" barrel (.25 cal.) that I have from Ed Rayl is breeched 9/16 X 18 thread size for which you can buy standard breechplugs.
