Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em
« on: July 19, 2023, 01:05:06 AM »
...as the old Navy saying goes. Here I have a small oil lamp that I use diesel fuel in that leaves a nice deposit of soot on the part your working on. I find it work better for me when I’m fitting metal to metal parts as it leaves a very contrasting mark. Here I’m fitting a Rod Alexander hooked breech. When in not smoking the part.  I have the oil lamp turned down very low and there is no perceptible smoke. It only takes a second to turn up the wick and smoke the part then turn it down again.
A convenient steel tool to hold the breech plug in the lathe for a turning application really work fine to hold the part for this kind of work. Hope this helps out.
Cheers Richard

A little polishing with a #8 cut file and it's IN.Rod approached me about making the 4 pin Stantons for these but I had to decline because i had no help and was doing flintlocks and schuetzen locks for shop in Germany.had me busy for a long time.Iwas glad to see Rod England get these facilities so those who can afford them be able to have them. They are a specialty item and appreciated by few.
