Boiled linseed oil after rust blue.

I rust blued my first barrel over the past few days. Often the final carding and clean boiling water the barrel looked great. I decided to use some Boiled linseed oil. This morning it was a pretty gummy mess.
How does one remove it without hurting the finish?

Did you neutralize the barrel with baking soda? If not, it could still rust.

Let it sit a while. Linseed oil takes a while to dry.

I tookof it off with mineral spirits, And oiled it up. I did use baking soda prior.
It still seems rather sticky.

The use of linseed oil is to fill the pores in the rusted surface.  it is not the intent to paint the barrel with the oil.  It's kind like having your driveway sealcoated.  The purpose is not to seal the tops of the gravel, but to seal the gaps between the rocks.

What I have done in the past is to coat the barrel with linseed and lightly wipe it after several hours.  This gets rid of the surface oil.  Then I take a propane torch and lick it over the barrel enough to lightly char the oil.  Then rub it down with fine scotchbrite.  This should not harm your rusted finish but should remove any surface oil remaining, but leaving the interstices filled.

It was the Laurel Mountain Forge stuff. I’m happy with it now.

I've used plain old motor oil for years after rust bluing barrels. Works fine, and is cheap.

...and it's what Laurel Mnt instructions spell out. I just did one myself and used used motor oil.

Just finished a rifle and rust blued and treated with linseed oil. After the fourth boil, I wiped BLO on the hot steel and let set for an hour, then wiped dry. Leaves a smooth, fingerprint free finish. Much nicer than motor oil.
