barrel coning question?
« on: August 07, 2023, 09:54:55 PM »
Does anyone make a barrel coning tool that can do more than one caliber?  Seems I saw one that instead of being caliber specific, the user could just use the right sized jag by it having a 10-32 threaded hole in the smaller end.
At least one taper might be able to do a "range" of calibers?
I have a 20 ga and a 24 ga fowlers I'd like to do, but really don't want to purchase two complete tools, and never use them again??
Any info or thoughts?

Joe Woods makes or did make one also. Ask around this site, I bet someone has one to sell or loan.

The coning tool I think you’re looking for is the one Mitch referenced. Ed Hamberg’s tool will cone multiple calibers. I have one and it works great.

I have been curious about the tool that uses interchangeable jags. How can one jag be concentric to the next jag if they are only located by screw threads. Which by nature have slop in them to be able to screw together. If there was an unthreaded boss area to locate the next size bushing and the screw only hole the bushing in place I could see it working.

Just thinking out loud.
Thank you

I think that, since the tool and jag rotate in unison, any slight misalignment would only result in an imperceptible, but uniform, change in the dimension of the cone at the small end.

I have only used the Joe Woods tool but the way you use to is to rotate the barrel counter clockwise and the tool clock wise with all the weight on the cutting surface. Even with a little slop on the jag it would be hard to cut an off-center cone.
