Round Poll Trade Tomahawk
« on: October 05, 2023, 05:20:15 PM »
I recently acquired this piece.  Appears to be a hand forged trade tomahawk which came from Ottawa County, Michigan.  Nice brown patina, interesting square inlay on blade.  It weights 13 oz overall.  Head is 5.25 inches in length.  15 inches overall

Any thoughts on age?

Modern made. Blade appears to be welded to the poll.

An original would not have a completely round eye or poll opening for the handle (another tip off that it was a welded joint between the eye and the blade - rather than being forged as one unit).

Also, hawks typically use a tapered opening with a friction fit and are slid on from the top of the opening up a tapered handle - rather than a straight or flared top poll opening - like an axe head that would be slid down from the top of the handle to a hard stop - and the handle top flared out with wedges to hold it in place.

Yes. Blade is Modern welded to a piece of pipe. I don’t see anything hand forged.

Here's one I made in High school back in the mid '60s. It's Arc welded.
