In curving out curving flint lock

Can somebody explain the difference between these locks as noted in the text please

Never heard this description before .. I'm guessing the spur or scroll at the top of the cock ... the one is rolling towards the top jaw bolt , the other is rolling away from the bolt ..

look at the finial  at the top of the cock behind the cock screw,  one curves inward, the other outward.  oops, Allen beat me to it!  Rick

The outcurving cock finial was a style change that came into fashion shortly after 1800.

It just occurred to me that in the text that part of the hammer is referred to as the ‘comb’ and the rest of the ‘hammer’ as the ‘cock’ .  Interesting the naming of these parts is the same as a rooster chicken were the frilly part of a head is called the comb.

That second lock with the sliding safety is probably a later lock with the roller bearing on the frizzen.  I would like to see the inside view of the mechanisms.  The waterproof pan is also a sign of a later stage in flintlock development.  If I had a choice of taking one of these locks it would be the second one in the photos.
