Long barrels have better resistance to wobble, momentum.  Long barrels are more effected by wind.  The Swiss schutzen rifles have shorter heavier barrels.   They hang on the target pretty good for me.  In the end it is about shooting the rifle you have and learning how to shoot it well.   

I usually shoot one of my Kibler SMR 40s in club matches.  I shot a shorter heavier halfstock over the weekend.  I do well with both.  I could not  choose just one.  Maybe I should take my own advice and settle on one.  : )

Shooting just one gun REALLY makes a difference. I shot the trail one whole fall, winter and spring, every weekend except for 2 of them, with my 14 bore rifle.
At Rendezvous B.C. that following fall I placed first in every event (7 IIRC) except for the 8th, the long range ctg. match. I placed in the middle in that one, round
balls, of course. I went through 25 pounds of powder, that 3/4's of one year.
