I have one of his earlier issues and it contains more original builder info rather than photos of the rifles.   I do believe the later issue/issues have more photos!

I agree.  The later books have more pictures than information.  Jerry told me when he did the first book he only had collectors in mind so it was full of information for collecotrs.   The amount of builders that purchased the book was a surprise to him. The 4 volumes together are hands down the most information you will find anywhere on Southern rifles.

Thanks so much guys.  I intend to order Jerry's four book set so I will be able to build a representative example of a Southern Rifle.  I have a Getz .50 cal x 46" long bbl. 1 1/16" at the breech just screaming at me.  I will do this since I can't afford to buy one of Ian's rifles.

If you enjoyed 1 and 2, then 3 and 4 will be right down you alley in my opinion.  Where else are you going to get that much info on Southern guns in one place.  There's very little written out there.

I have not seen Jerry's books and am not quite clear on what is meant by "southern" rifles.  Recently I have been drawn to Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland guns.  Do these books include some of those?

Without looking closely, the books are mostly TN and NC rifles or guns made up and down the Appalachia Mt. range with some AL and GA rifles sprinkled in.

Some of the "sprinkled in" rifles are my favorites.  Book 2 is my favorite, but if you are interested in Southern Rifles you really need all 4 books.  While there are some rifles that appear in more than 1 book, you will be missing some rifles if you leave a book out.  I bought Jerry's books before I attended my first CLA show in 2008.  It was really cool to actually see and handle some of the original southern rifles I had been drooling over.

Tim I just ordered three of the volumes and plan on adding the other one later. Just call Jerry up and mention southern rifles and he'll talk your leg off. Never met him in person but very freindly over the phone and knows a lot. By the way his books are $38.00 each postage paid now.
