Braintan jacket
« on: December 08, 2023, 10:30:39 PM »
I finally put together a lifelong dream of having a braintanned trappers jacket. I got the raw hides from a coworker, learned how to braintan and hand sewed the jacket form a pattern I drafted myself. It's about 2 years of off and on work. There are four large Wisconsin whitetail hides in the jacket.

Wow! That's an heirloom that should be passed down when the time comes.  Thanks for letting us see it.

MCT-- I must echo the positive comments already received. There's nothing quite like a braintanned buckskin jacket. A while back, the wife and I would braintan about 15-20 hides per year. One year, we had six large buckskins left over. I was musing to myself wondering what we should do with the leftover skins. She said--You know that jacket you always wanted? (I had been jones-ing for a coat like the one illustrated on page 4 Mountain Man's Sketchbook Vol. 2. Like someone said above, it was worth the wait.  ;D --JB

Thank you all for the kind words. This project was a bucket list item for me, and a labor of love. Now that I am more comfortable with braintanning, I will definitely be doing more of it. Probably not another jacket, but lots of smaller beadwork projects.

Would  consider that a Metis style jacket? It's beautiful!

There will be ties added, I still need to do that.

Would  consider that a Mettus style jacket? It's beautiful!

It's a blend somewhat of a trappers jacket and a metis style jacket. Most Metis jackets have more elaborate decoration, most often quillwork.
