Screw tip powder horn
« on: October 21, 2023, 09:53:11 PM »

Everyone seems to be posting horns, I thought I would post one of my screw tip horns that I did several years ago. It’s probably screaming to be scrimshawed, but I like it just the way it is. I have did scrimshawed horns in the past. Some of you here may recognize it but I have never posted this one before. Enjoy it!

Man, that horn is for holding gold dust not gun powder!

Hi everyone, I would like to thank everyone for the kind words. I have more horns and some rifles that I may be able to get posted one of these days. I didn't go into detail about this powder horn, but I should have mentioned that the base plug is hollowed out which makes it very light weight. The stopper head has a spiral to it that makes it fit your fingers on your left hand. Lately I have made all of my horns in this manner. Thanks for looking.

That sure is a visual treat. Nice treatment on the stopper. Any photos of it apart? What type of screws did you use, (if you used screws), on the forward hanger?
Thanks Richard

The forward hanger screws I made from stainless steel rods. They have a machine type thread and I forget what size I made them. They are acraglassed in and the plate is acraglassed to the horn as well. I am getting ready to post another horn when I get to it and I will take the tip off so you can see how it is threaded on. Thanks
Rod

The old timers made powder horns that were occasionally works of art. You guys make works of art that could also hold powder. Beautiful.

xx54,
Is the metal brass or gold?
Stunning work, thank you for sharing the pictures!

ScottH :
Thanks for looking. The metal is brass. I have done some in sterling silver. I have one to post if I ever get around to it!
