Stripping Permalyn Sealer

For those of you that have successfully stripped Permalyn Sealer from your stock, how was that accomplished? I’m looking for product used or method. There is one healthy coat of the sealer over iron nitrate. At this point I’m committed to starting over. I appreciate your help!

Why strip it?  What is the issue?

Consider cutting it back with Maroon scochbirte and calling it grain filler.

I missed some areas that still had light machine lines, my mistake. It wasn’t apparent to me until the first coat of Permalyn was applied. It almost looked like the stain took different in that area. Thanks.

I have never stripped off Permalyn Sealer, but I have stripped several factory finishes off of guns with Citristrip which works great in my opinion.  Good luck.

I use Home Hardware's Cica 1850 paint stripper for all finish stripping needs. The thick modern Epoxy/plastic finishes take 2 or more coats. Oil/varnishes = one.
Wear good rubber cloves & have good air circulation.

I’ve never used permalyn sealer but I usually will flood the stock on the first coat and then wipe off the excess.  I’m guessing the brand you used dried quickly, but you might want to try putting on more on the whole stock before going to stripping the stock.  I’ve heard lots of people having good results using that product, so I’m not for going the stripping route.

Permalyn sealer should not be hard to remove. I like to use 91% rubbing alcohol in of the steps I take when cleaning a barrel. The alcohol that oozes out while cleaning removed the Permalyn sealer in in the muzzle area of the one rifle I used it on in no time. One of the reasons I don't use that product anymore. I'm sure that most any kind of chemical stripper will remove it without much work.

Quick update. After stripping with Klean-Strip (x2) and getting smoked out of the basement I used Citristrip. This morning I spent the better part of 4-5 hours with 220 and 320 grit sandpaper. Cleaned with mineral spirits and decided to call it a day. After dinner I decided to re-apply a coat of iron nitrate and then blush. While blushing, little bubbles were popping up anywhere there was end grain. Used gray scotchbrite and mineral spirits again, that’s when I took this picture. Think I’ll let it sit until the morning and do one more round of iron nitrate. It is much lighter this go around after stripping, etc. I think the sealer is preventing the new stain from making it too far. Thank you all.

Another quick update. Besides moving too slow, just wanted to let you know things turned out ok. So, you can effectively strip Permalyn and recover after a mistake, it’s just not fun! Thanks again for all of your advice!
