Rev War French Musket
« on: February 12, 2024, 01:36:48 AM »
Here are a couple pics of a musket I aquired a few years ago from the estate of  a Dr. Donald Baird who I was told was the Director of the Princton University Museum, and that he had restored this musket.I am confused to what actual model this is.  I have an index card that Dr Baird had on this and he calls it French Fusil d'Infanterie Modele 1770-71 (1772)US ?
Lock M-1770 de St Entienne.
It has been converted to percussion and back to flint.  The forward stock had been cut but now restored to correct length.  The barrel was not shortened.
Thanks for looking, any knowledge would be welcomed.  And thanks.

great reference book for French arms here https://www.amazon.com/French-Military-Small-Didier-Bianchi/dp/1931464650

I believe the 70s have the same somewhat straight sideplate of the 1763/66s and the 73/74s are more wavy, but suggest you look into Bianchi's book.

Bigmon, could you post a good clear picture of the barrel proofs and lockplate markings?

I must have taken a couple dozen attempts at clearer photos.  But this is the best I could do. I tried some white talc to make them stand out, not much luck.  But I appreciate your trying to help.  There is a 72 on the barrel   Per Mr. Baird the lock reads  Manuf Royale / St,Etienne
Barrel is all round 44 1/4" 69 cal.
Sorry about the pics, best I could do.

Looks like a pretty standard M1770-74 French musket. I honestly don’t know what the exact year of the Model as every researcher seems to vary the date for the musket that came between the 1766 and 1777. I like it.

I really appreciate anything I could learn.  I am curious as to when the French gave / sold these to the US.
I treasure this gun as I had several ancestors served in the Rev War.  All militia so far as I have learned.  Somewhere I believe I learned these were on hand when they left Valley Forge.  I had a couple ancestors that were at Monmouth.  Perhaps this musket was there also.
Just be neat to know.
I have the bayonet also.
Thanks for looking.
