Updated pictures on a Lancaster rifle.
« on: February 19, 2024, 11:58:34 PM »
It’s been a time but I have made some progress. I have insetted the patch box  I drew up. I thinned the lid side plates as suggested by a member. I spent most of last winter reading a book on acanthus leaves by Maggie May a professional carver. This winter I carved the designs into the stock. A combination of relief and incised that tickled my fancy. The leaf designs are a mixture of Greek Roman and French styles. I just wiped things down with mineral spirits to help me see scratches and nicks etc.
I thought you all might like a gander.

Has a nice flow too it, especially aft of the cheekrest.  Should really pop with stain and finish.

Thank you. It’s my second attempt at building one. Your comments are appreciated!

I seem to go off build and learn the next thing from proper sharpening or drawing or studying early examples, metal finishing techniques and of course interacting with other builders, before committing to performing the task on the rifle. It’s not a matter of finishing a build as much as it is the exploration and the living of the journey getting there.
