Iron nitrate stain on plain maple
« on: February 17, 2024, 08:21:04 AM »
Is it worth using iron nitrate stain such as sold b Jim Kibler on a piece of maple with not very much curl. I’m not a builder so I am curious to hear from a builders mind on this.

For me - I say yes because it produces a nice reddish-brown color that I like on most of the maple that I used it on- your milage may vary. Be aware that not all maple will stain this color.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Yes.  My last build, which was just finished, is plain rock maple.  The ferric nitrate stain turned it a nice light brown.  It could have been made darker by applying tannic acid before the ferric nitrate.

What I have found is that it will bring out more curl than you realize was there. What looks like a plain piece of wood often is not quite so plain after all.

Agreed. Maple can be surprisingly interesting when stained. Even so called plain wood. I bought the plainest piece of maple available for a trade gun stock as I couldn’t source proper wood. And got surprised. BJH
