Auction -- U.S. Springfield 1816 .69 Caliber

This rifle is up for auction in 8 days.  Would like some opinions.  I've never seen a stock like the way it is cut out on the butt.  Looks to be over cleaned.  Just curious about it.  Might be interested in it.  Not sure.  Thanks in advance for any input.

I believe that is actually a Springfield "Model 1812" which had the recessed cheek rest that was copied from the French Model 1777.

Yep, Seth is right, a friend has a composite French musket with a 1777 stock with the cheek relief. The other hardware is earlier and wood filler pieces fill up the gaps.

Maybe just me...but I don't like overly cleaned guns. If I can help it I want only attic condition guns.

The Cock, Battery, and Battery Spring are replacements. Photo attached of an original as manufactured by Springfield.

No, not made in India. The barrel proofs shown on the musket in the Auction photo are the correct proofs for Springfield, for all muskets prior to the Model 1816.

Based on the auction lock photos, I would say the musket has probably been reconverted to flint.

Kent, I am generally familiar with the parts of a flintlock but what part is the battery and battery spring? I see the differences in the frizzen and frizzen spring is that also known as the battery and battery spring?  Thank you very much for your input.

Hi Dave,
Yes, the Ordnance Dept. used "Battery" and "Battery Spring" rather than Frizzen.

Attached is a page from the 1841 Ordnance Dept. Manual detailing the alterations needed to Percussion Alter flintlock muskets. The page contains the correct nomenclature for the components of the lock.

Well, out of curiosity I watched the auction.  No intention of bidding on it.  It went for $1150.00 plus 18% auction premium   So about $1357 plus shipping.
