0.20" (5mm) Balls??
« on: February 13, 2024, 11:42:23 PM »
I made a 22 ML long ago and got good accuracy.     I recently made a target pistol out of a length of 22 short barrel.  I wanted to experiment with patched balls.  I found some at a shot shell reloading outfit.  Those will cost me $65 for 10#, I only need a handful to see if the idea has merit.  They are size T-shot.  Benjamin balls are too big.  Any suppliers or suggestions?

I can use 22 pellets, and have some.  I made a sizer to remove the skirt flair.

H&N and maybe Crossman.
try pyramyd air. They should carry both makes. I don't know what the exact diameter of the round lead balls are for the various calibres.

With a nicely rounded crown, you should be able to load .216" through .218" round balls quite easily as there is VERY little lead to move with only about .002" deep rifling
using a .010" to 012" patch.

Ballistic Products Inc. I know you only want a few but they sell lead shot in .019 & .020 for something like $43.00

I use .223 air rifle slugs (30 grains) in my .22 BP rifle.  I fill the hollow base with Mink oil lube.  Tried patched balls, but my Vienna sausage fingers just can't handle those tiny balls even with a patch.  The slugs work great and I get 1/2" groups at 25 yards with 5.0 grains of 4f.  The slugs penetrate a 3/4" pine board completely at that range.  I have taken several back yard squirrels with the gun, and they drop like a rock.

I am aware of ballistic products T-shot, with shipping and tax,  It costs me about $60 to test the idea.

I had some NSA HP .22 air rifle slugs that run .216" and are 17.5gr. They are likely short enough to shoot well in that 24" ROT. (standard .22 Short ROT)
I think Neilson makes them up to .219"???

I like the idea of a .22 muzzleloader rifle, but I don't see anyone using it or posting photos.  When I ask, they say the rational minimum is .32.  Could you talk more about your .22 BP?  groups, range, accuracy, cleanliness, etc?

Sandro here's a .25 cal. round ball gun that Taylor made. He's won a couple monthly postal matches right here at ALR with it over the last 4 years.

Not as much recoil as a .22 LR.
