Mike’s, I’m interested in the answer to your question too. I have a choice Maple plank that is about 45 years old along with a light .50 cal 42” Getz bbl. about the same age. But I’m a short guy 5’7” and was wondering if that bbl might be too long for my stature loading wise.???

I am (or was) 4" taller than you, but managed to load a 48"(6" longer than 42") barreled rifle just fine. Simply put the butt on the ground behind you. I had to.

Agreed. I dont think you are ever too short to load a long barrel the way Daryl discribed. That's how I Have I have to load the 46" barreled guns I have.

I have a question for you'all that have, or have built, one of these rfiles....What do you think about the length of the barrel, 39" I beleive? does it look right for the gun?

I have been thinking of trying my hand at one of these kits for while but I generally go for a longer barrel, 42" or more.  I do have an early Lancatser that has a 38" barrel. It's a nice rifle but to my eye, it has always looked a little short to me.

Thanks for any thoughts or input y'all have....Mick

I don't own either, but a friend of mine had the early Kibler colonial, sold it, and built a woodsrunner, both in .50 caliber. I liked the balance and the way the woodsrunner "points" a lot better personally when I was shooting his rifle.
I am the Lead Historian/Firearms Specialist at Rock Island Auction Co., but I am here out of my own personal interests in muzzle loading and history.
