Bear Face Bag
« on: March 13, 2024, 10:27:52 PM »
Something a bit different from the normal work here at the shop. An ursine face bag for a friend. Gusseted bag with large interior pocket. The strap incorporates an old harness buckle used in Appomattox VA well over a century ago....long, long afore ole Hacker set up shop on my grandaddy's mill seat ; )

I like that a lot, James!  Sure has a southern Appalachia/Blue Ridge look about it.

Wow, I like that one. Back in the 60's the man, Wood Trumbo who got me into this game had an original Bear face bag from up around Fulks Run in Rockingham Co. It was made from one piece of hair on hide, he said he thought it to be a cub. It was pretty well worn but there was no doubt about what it was. I would think anybody would be happy to have one like yours.

Wow, it’s certainly different, but in a good way. I like it.

Interesting. It might look nice as a wall display, but for regular, practical use… I can’t see it happening.

So what??? Black powder, flintlocks, hunting bags, powder horns…none of these things are practical  in this day and age. I’mgrateful an artist/maker like James is stepping outside of his comfort zone and applying his skills to something weird and different. I’m sure the bag is practical enough for the slow paced woodswalks or low impact hunting 99% of the people here would use it for, aside from hanging it on the wall, which in my opinion is purpose enough for making it.

Awesome bag James, my only complaint is you haven’t shared more photos. I hope to keep seeing work from you that keeps me guessing and a little confused

Not my idea. Just a favor for a good friend. It first fell victim to my procrastination and then was actually forgotten about after some years. It went to its home shortly after a picture was snapped. Its half taxidermy and half bag making. The head is stuffed somewhat to shape out the head and give the ears a good stance.
To those familiar with my style of work, it is immediately recognized as not being my "bag" : )

May not be your "bag", but like usual for your work it is cool and desirable.  Well done sir.   God Bless,   Marc
