32 cal KY
« on: December 31, 2009, 05:40:18 PM »
Here is the second rifle by an unknown maker. The overall style reminds me of several guns by Cornelius Iman,
1830-1885, Hampshire Co., WVA.

32 cal, 42" barrel, 57.5" loa. Unmarked barrel and lock, except that inside of hammer is
stamped "18R".

All the best

I'm not convinced that this rifle is "old", or at least that all of it is pre-20th Century. The sideplate and patchbox look vaguely familiar, but in a "store-bought repro" sort of way.

Anyone else have any thoughts about this?

Curt,
I had the same initial response -- that it probably dates from the 20th-century revival period.

FWIW, The patch box is the same one McCrory uses in his The Modern Kentucky Rifle The star matches too along with the screw.

The patchbox looks like the same one that Numrich Arms used to sell, and the gun was also offered in kit form.

The maker was probably a shoemaker as the gun appears to have been cobbled together.........sorry, couldn't resist.   :(

I thought Numrich too, but I think the hinge is wrong. I think they were flat, but I haven't seen one in a long time.

Appears to be a twentieth century product to me; if it could be assigned to a school, it looks like it would be one of the NC regions. The final finishing has an unsophisticated look which is often the case when rifles are mass produced, or built up out of a kit: purely for use and not beauty. Thank you for showing it around and hope that you have some fun with this one as a shooter.

1960s-1970s by the look of it.

Agree. The 42 in. barrle is the kicker. A standard modern length. A Dixie Gun Works  T. G. and B.P. Modern stains.  An old new rifle. Probably a Douglas or Numrich barrel.

Many thanks for the input. I was suspicious of the rifle, mainly due to the side plate. For
some reason it seemed to say modern gun.

One thing that threw me off is that there are no markings on the barrel and I though
most of the commercial barrels available in 1960-70 would have been stamped with the maker.

However, I am not disappointed as it is in shooting condition and I only paid about $150 for both
this and the 41 cal Dimick.

all the best
