Hatchet
« on: July 11, 2024, 03:51:03 PM »
Found this one in a consignment store in Wayland MA, about 8 miles from Concord MA. Probably just a coincidence.

I added the haft.

Some interesting markings on it.

Similar hatchet was excavated at Crown Point, NY.

6 x 3.5

That looks perfect for a utility ax of the early to late 1700s. Great find.

Thanks Rich.

I also circulated the images to some organizations and individuals well versed in 18th century weapons, tools and blacksmithing.  Yes, the consensus is that the hatchet is likely a camp tool (poll hatchet used for light work, etc.), British in style, and potentially British "issued" based on the markings.
